Bourbon Street is at times a nightmare, but if it gets too tiresome, drop down one block to Royal and you're in a different world. Judging from my past visits, the best time to visit New Orleans would have to be in April or early May. March seems to be touch and go. It could be 80 degrees, or like this year it could be 50 degrees which is a little too cool. Summer is oppressively hot.

Early last September I flew to New Orleans from North Carolina for a trip that lasted less than 24 hours. I was paying a visit to one of my best friends who lived in a fantastic loft right off Bourbon Street. He had lured me to town for this irrationally short trip with the promise of Southern Decadence - an annual six day pride event that has been running in the city since 1972.
